# Refify

> Refify is an interactive referencing and citation management system for students and researchers. It lets you build, organise, annotate, format and export academic references with exact, customisable reference styles.

Refify is a web app (refify.app). Users create "papers" (projects), add references to them, and Refify formats each reference and its in-text citation according to a reference style template the user or their institution defines. Because styles are user-editable templates rather than fixed presets, Refify can reproduce any institution's referencing rules character-for-character.

## What Refify does

- **Reference styles as templates**: Build or edit any style (APA-like, Harvard-like, institution-specific) field by field, with full control over punctuation, italics and spacing.
- **Quick Fill (AI-assisted)**: Paste a URL, DOI, ISBN or a raw reference string and Refify retrieves and maps the metadata into the correct fields.
- **Papers and references**: Organise references per paper, sort and group by source type, add private notes and favourites.
- **In-text citations**: Every reference produces both a full reference-list entry and a matching in-text citation.
- **Export**: Export a finished reference list to Word (.docx), PDF, RTF or plain text, or copy it as rich text straight into a document.
- **Discover**: Browse published, versioned collections of reference styles shared by institutions and other users.
- **Sharing**: Invite collaborators to a paper as editor or viewer.
- **Agent integrations (MCP)**: Refify exposes an MCP server, so AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor can — after the user signs in and approves access — list the user's papers, search their references and create new papers.
